Feminism and The Male Gaze

Laura Mulvey is a British feminist film theorist who worked at the British Film Institute for many years. She states that Hollywood cinema and production puts the spectator in a masculine subject position, with the figure of a women on the screen as the object of desire and "The Male Gaze".

She said, "Women, then stands in patriarchal culture as a signifier for the male other, bound by a symbolic order in which man can live our he fantasies and obsessions through linguistic command, by imposing them on the silent image of woman still tied to her place as bearer of meaning not maker of meaning."

What she said is an example of objectification of the female characters in relation to this controlling (male) gaze and narcissistic identification with an ideal image on the screen

The Music Video to Miley Cyrus' song 'Wrecking Ball' is a very good example to the theory of the male gaze!
The Music Video includes explicit shots of the artist and also portrays the her in a bold way revealing more than what is expected, because of her past with Disney! To conclusion because of these reasons, this video supports the idea of the male gaze and the ideal image on the screen.
